Mosquitoes can affect our lives severely. Mosquito bites cause skin irritation. The worst part is that they can cause some life-threatening diseases like Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika Virus, Malaria, and West Nile Virus.

Over the years many people have died because of mosquito bites. Some of these diseases don’t have proper treatment. So, preventive measures should be taken to stop the infestation of mosquitoes in the house and save ourselves from these life-threatening diseases.

Here are some simple ways you can reduce mosquitoes around your property.

Have screens
You must open the windows and doors of the house to let fresh air in. However, this can bring mosquitoes inside as well, especially during dusk. Put screens in your windows and doors so that you can prevent the mosquitoes from entering the house, at the same time, get all the fresh air you need. Mosquitoes won’t be able to penetrate through the small holes of the screen; thus your house will be safe.

Remove stagnant water
Mosquitoes breed on stagnant water. So, you should remove any stagnant water. Even if a bottle cap is filled with water and left for a long time, mosquitoes may breed and spread in the house. So, be careful after taking shower. Make sure no water remains in the bucket to welcome the mosquitoes.

You should empty the water toys or garden equipment that might accumulate rainwater. If it rains, immediately get rid of the water. Mosquito eggs usually take four days to become nymphs and you shouldn’t allow that time for the eggs to mature. The drain lines and gutters must be clear of any dry leaves, branches, or debris; otherwise, it may create a pool of water.

Keep yard clean
You should trim any high grass, bushes, or tall branches in your yard. Mosquitoes like living in shadowy places. Therefore, you should keep your yard clean so that the sunlight can fall in all the areas. This will keep mosquitoes away. Due to the sunlight, any wet area in the yard will also become dry; thus preventing any possibility of mosquito infestation.

Keep mosquito repellent plants
Mosquitoes cannot tolerate the smell of basil, peppermint, citronella, lemon balm, lavender, and marigold flowers. If you grow these plants inside your home or around it, then mosquitoes will stay away from your home. Basil and peppermint are perfect for salad and many other dishes. So, they will be useful for your cooking too.

Clear garbage
You shouldn’t let any garbage accumulate in your house for a long time. Mosquitoes hide in the garbage. You must remove your trash every day if needed multiple times a day. If you keep your house and neighborhood clean, you will be saved from the horrible mosquito bites.

You can use mosquito repellents, but these are chemicals. If there are children and pets at home then it’s best to avoid them. If you keep your home and the surrounding areas clean and free from any standing water then there will be less chance of mosquito breeding in your house.
